Much of the growth and success of Houston is based on education. Houstonians are more likely to have completed four years of college than the average U.S. adult. A wide array of public and private schools here have received accolades for their innovative programs and stimulating educational activities. The Houston Independent School District's High School for the Performing Arts offers an acclaimed program for young people with talent and interest in performing arts. Public and private schools offer a wealth of specialized programs designed to meet basic needs as well as to cultivate individual interests and abilities. Houston enjoys a fine reputation for its higher-education resources, including several extensive community college systems and public and private universities.
Founded in 1912, Rice University is a private university that has one of the largest student endowments in the nation.
